About This Chart

This chart visualizes the seat-location fatality rates reported in TIME’s 2015 analysis of 17 aircraft accidents from 1985 to 2000. The analysis included accidents in which both fatalities and survivors were present and seat maps could be examined.

Data Visualization Method

  • The aircraft cabin is represented as a scatter plot, with seat positions arranged using interpolated X and Y coordinates over an airplane-shaped background.
  • The three published cabin-section fatality rates are shown as 38% for the front third, 39% for the middle third, and 32% for the rear third.
  • TIME also reported two seat-location extremes: 28% for rear middle seats and 44% for middle-section aisle seats.
  • Only these five published values are treated as observed data in the visualization.
  • Colors between sections are used as a visual transition between known values and do not represent measured fatality rates for individual seats.

Creator’s Note

The purpose of this chart is not to identify or recommend a “safest seat.” It translates a limited historical analysis into the physical layout of an aircraft so that the differences between the front, middle, and rear sections can be understood spatially.

The visual emphasis is therefore on the pattern reported in this specific sample rather than on individual seat-level risk. TIME also noted that survival and fatalities were often distributed irregularly across seats, indicating that seat position alone did not determine the outcome of an accident.

TIME did not publish the passenger counts or survivor counts underlying each cabin-section percentage, nor a complete table of fatality rates for every front–middle–rear and window–middle–aisle combination. The methodology for defining section boundaries and seat-position categories was also not published in sufficient detail to independently reproduce the analysis.

The chart therefore should not be interpreted as an official aircraft-seat safety ranking, a prediction of an individual passenger’s survival probability, or a result representative of all aircraft types and accidents. Values such as 32% are historical observed fatality rates within this specific accident sample and should not be converted directly into an individual survival probability.
