About This Chart

Data Visualization Method

  • Data: Reported color-share figures for four iPhone Pro generations, drawn from public buyer surveys, carrier preorder data, and community polling. These are reported shares, not official Apple sales figures.
  • Period and models: 2022–2025, covering iPhone 14 Pro through 17 Pro. The figures come from different regions — the United States, South Korea, and a global tech community — rather than one consistent market.
  • Selection: The four most recent Pro generations. An earlier draft included the iPhone 13 Pro, but five model blocks made the layout too tall for mobile and archive embeds, so it was reduced to four.
  • Processing: Each generation's shares were mapped to a 100-cell grid, where 1 square = 1 percentage point. For the 17 Pro, the source rounded to 99% (40 / 33 / 26), so one point was added to the top-ranked color to reach 100, giving 41 / 33 / 26.
  • Chart form: Each model is a 20-column × 5-row grid of 100 squares, colors ordered from highest to lowest share, left to right. A hover popup shows each color's name and its approximate HEX.

Creator's Note

The aim was to place four generations of color choices on one comparable board — read less as a statistical plot and more as a product palette laid out side by side.

A hierarchical sunburst was tested first, but the square grid read more directly for comparing each model's 100% composition. The background was moved from light gray to dark charcoal (#181B20), because the silver, white, and natural titanium finishes washed out against a light field and lost their separation.

This is an aistockQ compilation: separate public sources gathered into one visualization dataset, not a single panel study or an Apple dataset.

Limitations

The four generations come from different countries, samples, and methods — a US buyer survey, a Korean carrier preorder, and a global community poll. They are not one longitudinal dataset, and shouldn't be read as a single group of buyers changing over time.

They also don't represent official Apple figures. Apple has not released consistent color-share data by generation, so this chart reflects the cited sources rather than official global sales.

Every model is scaled to 100 squares for comparison, and the 17 Pro includes a one-point normalization where the source summed to 99%. The equal grid size is a layout choice — it carries no information about sample size or reliability.

What This Chart Doesn't Show

It doesn't show a global trend or a shift in taste over time. Because the underlying sources differ, readings like "purple faded worldwide after 2022" or "natural titanium is more popular globally" aren't supported. Within each cited dataset, it shows only which colors were relatively more chosen.

The HEX values in the chart and popup are approximate visualization colors chosen to resemble each finish — not Apple's official color codes. The data also reflects reported choices, not the reasons behind them.
