The night-lights contrast across the divided peninsula is usually shown with older satellite composites.
This chart was built to see that same contrast on a current, single clear-sky night, rendered through one consistent method rather than stitched from many dates. That meant tracking recent nights and choosing one where observation over the peninsula was unusually clean.
Under identical processing, the southern half reads as far wider and stronger in nighttime light than the northern half. That difference is a signal about lighting infrastructure and how a landscape is lit, not a scorecard — where a single border runs, one continuous piece of land resolves into two very different night signatures.
This is a single night, so it is more sensitive to weather and one-off activity than a long-term average. Clouds, snow, viewing angle, and quality filtering all shape how much of a region can be seen.
Observation coverage varies sharply here — from most of South Korea and North Korea down to only a small share of Russia. Where coverage is low, an area can look sparse simply because few cells were observable, not because it is truly dark.
The weak-light cleaning is a conservative visualization choice, not a classifier that proves which pixels are "real" light. The number of displayed points reflects area, coverage, and these rules — it is not a country ranking.
Brightness is an indirect indicator. It is not the same as population, GDP, or electricity use; it also depends on fixtures, the shift to LED, lighting policy, industry, roads, and season. Black Marble corrections reduce interference but do not remove all uncertainty.
The twinkle animation is a visual effect made by duplicating some static points; it is not flicker recorded by the satellite. Only the static base layer is data.
Observation gaps are not zero. The unobserved share of North Korea should not be read as darkness, or as an absence of people or electricity.
Sea lights — ships, anchorages, offshore facilities — were deliberately removed and do not appear, even though the raw product can contain them. And no cause behind the lights, whether wealth, energy use, or governance, can be read directly from this map.
